George Garza

Sunnyside football, basketball and track & field senior • 5-10, 170

● The lowdown: Garza is one of Sunnyside's three standout receivers; fellow seniors Nathan Vega and Wally Altamirano are the others. Garza leads the defending Class 4A state champion Blue Devils with 528 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 25 catches. He and his teammates begin their title defense tonight at 7 in a first-round state playoff game at home against Flagstaff Coconino.

● How easy does Sunnyside quarterback Jaime Cota make it for the receivers?: "He makes it real easy because he's one of the best quarterbacks in the state. He knows all his reads, and we all communicate well."

● Favorite athlete: Eagles receiver Terrell Owens

● Favorite movie: "Dumb and Dumber"

● Favorite Mexican food restaurant: Mi Nidito Cafe

● Playoff team that worries Sunnyside the most: "We're not necessarily worried. We take one game at a time, but the team that can probably give us the most trouble is (Peoria) Centennial."

● Favorite quote: "Champions are made from something. They have deep inside them a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill and the will, but the will must be stronger than the skill."

● Which is better: Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas gifts?: Christmas gifts

● Where do you keep your state championship ring from 2003?: "I keep it in a little jar in my room. I never wear it. I won't wear it until I get another one."

● Favorite Web site: www.sunnysidefootball.com

● Extracurricular activities: Garza is involved in Student Council and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA).

● Aspirations after high school: Although most of his plans are still up in the air, Garza says he wants to attend college, possibly in California, and earn a degree that will help him become a physical trainer.

● Coach-speak: "George has become more of a leader for us than anything. He's been real instrumental to our defense, too. We moved him from his natural safety position to linebacker three weeks ago, and he has adjusted really well. He has turned out to be one of our most valuable players." - Sunnyside football coach Richard Sanchez
