Football Player of the Week: Sunnyside QB Cota has productive comeback from injury

Sunnyside High School quarterback Jaime Cota on Friday night showed he's still one of the best in town.

Cota, the Tucson Citizen's high school football player of the week for the second time this year, didn't skip a beat as the No. 1 Blue Devils beat visiting Ironwood Ridge 49-7.

Cota, a senior, completed 22 of 26 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored on a 1-yard run.

Cota has been hampered by a knee injury in recent weeks. He missed one game and parts of others.

"Jaime did a great job coming back," Sunnyside head coach Richard Sanchez said after the game. "We just had to make sure he played as much as he could."

Cota helped lead the Blue Devils to a 12-2 record and the Class 4A state championship last year. Sunnyside stands at 8-0 this season.

For the year, Cota has completed 59 of 96 passes for 958 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
