Xavier Smith

Sunnyside track & football / 100 meter, 200 and 4x100 relay & running back / junior / 6 feet

° The lowdown: Smith is a sprinter on the track team, but he is best known for his exploits on the football field. Smith, a member of the Star's first-team All-Southern Arizona squad, rushed for 1,871 yards and 23 touchdowns as he led the Blue Devils to the 4A state title.

° Favorite athletes: Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis for active player, and all-time is Chicago Bears legendary running back Walter Payton - "He was great at what he did and he worked the hardest at his position."

° Favorite Web site: rivals.com - "It's a Web site that ranks high school players. I'm not up there yet because I'm a junior."

° Favorite music: "Everything. It don't matter, even country. I listen to Tupac before an event because he gives you words and makes you feel what he is feeling."

° Favorite TV shows: "Smallville" or "106th & Park." - "I like them because I like Superman and I like to listen to music. And "Dave Chappelle's Show." I think that's the funniest show ever."

° Favorite place to eat: El Guero Canelo - "I like to eat the carne asada burrito. It's good."

° Weekend activities: Hanging out with friends and going paintballing - "There's this desert we all go to and we all have our own paintball guns. I watch a lot of movies, too. I go to the movies a lot."

° Favorite subject: Math - "It's easy. I've always been pretty good at math."

° My NCAA bracket looked: "Pretty good. Duke and the U of A kind of threw me off."

° Best sports moment he has seen: "When Dominique Wilkins dunked on 7-foot-7-inch Manute Bol. How's a big guy like that going to get dunked on? Get him out of the game!"

° Best thing about being a high school athlete: "Being a star and everybody knows you, and people talking highly of you. My coaches say don't get big-headed though."

° My parents don't know that I: "My dad knows everything. He calls me all the time, and I have to tell him everything."

° Most embarrassing moment: "At practice, this guy barely tackled me and everybody made fun of me because he's like a 'Rudy' kind of guy."

° In 10 years: "I'll probably have a job, house, car and money to spend and do whatever."

° Perfect job: "To play a sport that you love so you never get bored or tired."

° Aspirations after high school: "I'll go to college and probably major in computers because they interest me. My ambition is to play in the NFL and be a star."

° Coach-speak: "He's making up a lot of ground and doing it quickly since an injury last season. He's lacking in technique and at the starting blocks, and that needs to be improved. Xavier has got the strength to be the best. He's a key member in our relay team, very well liked by the team and they know he's one of our leaders." - Rafael Ortega, Sunnyside track coach
