Sunnyside and Mountain View exchanged touchdowns the way boys trade football cards.

Visiting Mountain View (5-3, 0-1) hurled six touchdowns at Sunnyside, but the Blue Devils (8-0, 1-0) threw seven TDs back at the Mountain Lions to post a thrilling 49-42 win Friday night.

"We kept punching them in the mouth, but they punched back," Mountain View lineman Spenser Williams said.

The scoring seesawed all game.

Both squads scored in the first and the second quarters to cap the first half tied at 14.

They turned the second half into a horse race by combining for nine touchdowns. The game was tied three times in the second half.

"I had a gut feeling that we were just going to have to outlast them," Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez said.

Sunnyside's dual-threat quarterback, Jamie Valdez, was the difference. The senior's 47-yard scamper early in the third quarter gave the Blue Devils a 21-14 lead.

His decisive 23-yard TD dash at the 9-minute mark of the fourth quarter broke a 35-35 tie and provided Sunnyside with a lead it would not relinquish.

"I give all the credit to my offensive line," Valdez said.

Valdez rushed for 194 yards and four TDs. He passed for 199 yards and one TD. Mountain View halfback Dan Moore rushed for 205 yards and two TDs. He scored on a 94-yard run in the fourth quarter.
