Seniors Javon Stevenson and Alex Leon helped lead host Sunnyside to a victory over previously unbeaten Chandler Basha in a defensive battle.

With the Blue Devils trailing 3-2, Leon caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sammy Olivas with 57 seconds remaining to give Sunnyside the win.

A head-to-head game with little offensive gain for either team, the Blue Devils (3-0) were able to overcome a fierce Basha defense to remain unbeaten.

Stevenson rushed for 118 yards on 27 carries, one week after gaining 169 yards.

Highlight reel: The safety called early in the third quarter gave Sunnyside the first points of the game and the struggling Blue Devils' offense line the momentum it needed to bring down the Bears.

Player of the game: Olivas. The Blue Devils' senior QB was 7 of 13 for 77 yards, and his craftiness in the air and on the run allowed Sunnyside to keep its game-winning drive alive. He also amassed 47 yards on the ground.

By the numbers: 1. The number of touchdowns scored by either team.

He said it: "Our kids just dug down deep and needed to keep their composure, and they did." — Coach Richard Sanchez
