The Sunnyside High School football team took care of business Friday night, setting up a big game against Salpointe Catholic.

The Blue Devils' defense kept host Mountain View's offense in check in a 20-0 win. Sunnyside (7-2, 4-0) hosts Salpointe (9-0, 4-0) for the Class 5A South title next week.

Sunnyside held the Mountain Lions (5-4, 2-2) to 141 yards. The Blue Devils caused Mountain View's offense to go three-and-out numerous times while consistently terrorizing quarterback Ben Johnson.

"I thought our defense played pretty well," said Mountain View coach Wayne Jones. "We gave up a couple of big plays but they just stifled us offensively.

"We just didn't do anything." The only bright spot for the Lions came on the opening kick of the second half, when Dan Moore ran it back 90 yards to the Blue Devil 6-yard line.

However, Mountain View fumbled on the next play and three plays after that, Sunnyside went up 20-0 when Sammy Olivas found Zach Holmes for a 60-yard strike.

"Our defense came out and played tough," Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez said.

Sunnyside was sloppy at times, as evidenced by its 16 penalties for 115 yards.

That won't do against the unbeaten Lancers.

"We have to cut down and eliminate our penalties," Sanchez said. "We had too many penalties tonight. That just killed us."

Jovan Stevenson led Sunnyside's offense with 168 rushing yards on 25 carries, to go along with two touchdowns.

"Salpointe's good, they are going to come for us," Stevenson said. "Everybody's coming for us, everybody wants to beat Sunnyside regardless."

Mountain View will travel to Flowing Wells (1-8, 0-4). The Mountain Lions entered Friday's game at No. 9 in the 5A-Division II power rankings.

"I believe we should be in the playoffs," Jones said.
