Sunnyside High School found a new weapon in running back Manny
Aguilar on Friday night as the Blue Devils broke a two-game
losing streak by beating Tucson High 40-0 in a Class 5A South
game.
Aguilar, replacing the injured Jovan Stevenson, ran for
touchdowns of 14 and 34 yards and racked up 212 yards on 26
carries in Sunnyside's homecoming game.
Turning point: A mainstay of the Blue Devils' offense
this year, wide receiver Alex Leon scored three times, twice
on passes from quarterback Jamie Valdez that rocked Tucson
High (0-6, 0-1) in the first quarter.
Leon had a stretching, fingertip catch on a touchdown play
that went 55 yards on the Blue Devils' first possession.
Notable: Sunnyside's Zach Holmes recovered a Marc Damon
fumble on the 14-yard line that led to a touchdown by Aguilar,
giving the Blue Devils a 28-0 halftime lead.
Key stat: Sunnyside outgained Tucson High 461-79.
Quotable: "(Manny Aguilar) played great tonight," said
Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez, whose team boosted its record
to 4-2.
