Sunnyside falls short in 1st game back in 5A

Arizona Daily Star

Things seemed strange at Sunnyside on Friday night - from its new region to a rare home loss.

The Blue Devils allowed just three points in the first half, but gave up 21 in the second half to fall 24-20 to Glendale Mountain Ridge in their first game since realignment, which put them back in Class 5A.

Sunnyside had a chance to take the lead late in the game, but quarterback Sammy Olivas was unable to connect on four consecutive pass attempts from the Mountain Lions' 22-yard line, and the Blue Devils turned the ball over on downs.

"We made some mistakes, but we've been there," Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez said. "We didn't stop them when we needed to."

The Blue Devils were led offensively by running backs Mike Smith and Jovan Stevenson, who combined for 223 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
