Michael Smith's essay: Father has laid the blueprint to be successful

Tucson Citizen

Influence: To control or move by power, physical or moral; to affect by gentle action; to exert an influence upon; to modify, bias, or sway; to move; to persuade; to induce.

My dad, Xavier Smith Sr., is the individual that has influenced me. I admire my dad, but I don't want to be like him. He has been with me step by step from day one. Without him I would not be the person that I am today.

He taught me how to never give up, even if I am not the favorite to win. He always says there is a chance to come up on top somehow, someway, but if I do not, life goes on.

My dad has moved me with his words, actions, and taught me many things that might help me be successful in the real world. It seems my dad has done everything for me and I have done little for him.

When he talks, I listen to him because I think it will help. I don't believe my dad would hurt me in any way.

Straightforward is what my dad is with me. My dad told me, "In order to be successful you have to go to school and do well. You don't have to like it, but understand that you need it to be successful." He also talked about respect. Respect your peers. Always say "yes, sir" or "no, sir." Respect is a big thing with my dad. Respect them and they will respect you, he said, even if they have a different opinion.

Actions! My dad has taught me things that have helped me and will help me in the future. People have noticed my actions, not only athletically, but also academically. My dad told me grades are important and they will help you in life. My grades are helping me.

Now my grades are earning me scholarship money and I do not have to worry about not being eligible to play sports. I listen to people's advice and follow it if it is beneficial. You never know if it might help. If it does not help, then I do not do it again, but at least I made the effort. If it does, then I have gained something. Actions speak louder than words, according to my dad.

My dad has influenced me a great deal. He has given me a chance to be successful in life. Now I have to do my part and not let him down or let myself down. I know what I have to do to be successful. By respecting others, following through on my actions, and accepting good advice, I will be successful.
